Robert Clatworthy is probably the greatest modern sculptor of animals [with the exception of Marino Marini's magnificent Horse and Riders, of course] He modelled them in wet plaster and had to work very quickly as the plaster dries after a few minutes - an expressionistic sculptor. In the late 1950s he was described by the famous art critic David Sylvester as the best young sculptor since Henry Moore. He exhibited at the Hanover Gallery in the 1950s and early 1960s alongside Francis Bacon, Reg Butler, Picasso and Giacometti - later moving to the Waddington Galleries
